Using search engines to find Web sites


What is a Search Engine?

search engine A search engine is a database compiled by a machine. There is no input from people. Be careful! No one evaluates Web sites before they are added by the search engine. Scholarly sites are included along with millions of questionable sites.

Plus, many sites cannot be found by a search engine:

  • full text journals that require subscriptions
  • information in library catalogues and databases (e.g. PubMed)
  • web sites which require a login (even for free access)
  • password protected sites
