Animals must make decisions every day about where and when to feed. Their choices have important implications: how well they reproduce and how long they survive. It is not surprising then that scientists have been interested in how foraging behaviour has evolved in different species.
In this game, we simulate the foraging decisions a hummingbird must make as it visits patches of flowers in two different habitats; a habitat with dense food sources and a habitat with poorer food density. In the exercise, we apply the marginal value theorem to understand the different optimal solutions in the contrasting habitats.
